Guidelines new applications
It takes approximately six weeks to receive your ICOM card, due to administrative processing at the headquarters in Paris. Please take this into account when submitting your application. Each year in December, a new annual sticker for the card is sent by post. The membership fee will then be automatically debited from your account.
Important: applications submitted before October 1 are registered as memberships for the current year, and the full annual fee will be charged. Applications submitted after October 1 are registered as memberships for the following year.
The membership fees for institutional members depend on the institution’s annual budget. Each category includes a specific number of membership cards.
| Category | Rate | Operating budget size | Number of cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Institution I | € 335 | < € 30.000 | 3 |
| Institution II | € 405 | € 30.000 up to € 100.000 | 4 |
| Institution III | € 565 | € 100.000 up to € 1.000.000 | 5 |
| Institution IV | € 750 | € 1.000.000 up to € 5.000.000 | 6 |
| Institution V | € 805 | € 5.000.000 up to € 10.000.000 | 7 |
| Institution VI | € 995 | > € 10.000.000 | 8 |
Supportive Institutional Membership
Government organizations and foundations that provide policy or financial support to museums are eligible for a Supportive Institutional Membership. With this type of membership, you become part of the ICOM network, but you do not have voting rights at the General Assembly and cannot hold a position on the board.
Regardless of the size of the operating budget, this membership costs €1,975. Supportive Institutional Members receive eight ICOM cards.
Submit your application using this form.
Important: registration with International Committees
Is your museum an institutional member of ICOM, or planning to become one? Then up to three people from your organization can act as representatives. These three representatives may also join an ICOM International Committee. In these committees, museum professionals from around the world collaborate on specific themes or areas of expertise. There are International Committees (ICs) on topics such as museum education, marketing, and ethical issues.
As a member of an IC, you also have voting rights within that committee. You can read more about ICOM ICs here.
In the application form, you can enter up to three names, along with their preferred International Committee. You should also provide the name of one person who will serve as the primary contact for your organization’s membership—typically someone from the secretariat or the office manager of your museum.
