Recap: ICOM Talk by Elise Foster Vander Elst

15/07/2024

On 12 July 2024, we welcomed Elise Foster Vander Elst, Head of Exhibitions & Environmental Impact Lead at the Design Museum in London for yet another ICOM Talk. At the Design Museum, they are well advanced in mapping and reducing the environmental impact of temporary exhibitions.

And this is not only about making sharp choices about which objects to exhibit (Do we really need that one large object that has to come by plane?), but also about sustainable alternatives in exhibition construction. Reusable walls, for instance, and texts printed directly on the wall instead of on vinyl that eventually ends up in the bin.

Under Elise's guidance, the Design Museum developed, among other things, a 'carbon calculator' and various decision trees to standardise this process and share this knowledge within the international museum network.
